Missed the Masterclass? Watch the T.L.T.Q. Music Journalism Recap

At Saving Grace, we received an incredible influx of applications for the T.L.T.Q. (Too Legit To Quit) Music Journalism workshop. While we could only host 16 writers for our intensive session, we believe the knowledge shared by Alex Coles is too vital to keep behind closed doors.

Whether you were too far away to travel, weren’t selected during the submission process, or are just discovering the T.L.T.Q. project now—this recap is for you. We’ve distilled the energy and the expertise of the day into a video resource that any aspiring writer can use to sharpen their pen.

Deconstructing “Tainted Love” with Alex Coles

The workshop was anchored in the concepts of Alex Coles’ acclaimed book, Tainted Love. In this video, we dive into how Alex uses the “twisted” relationship between the artist and there inspiration to provide a framework for deeper music criticism.

This isn’t about learning how to write a simple “5-star review”—it’s about learning how to analyze the cultural friction that makes music stay with us.

What You’ll Learn from the Video:

  • The Analytical Lens: How to apply the “Tainted Love” concept to your own music writing.
  • Song Selection & Logic: Hear why participants chose specific tracks to represent “twisted soul” and how they defended those choices.
  • Industry Standards: A look at the professional expectations for the next generation of West Yorkshire journalists.
  • The Vibe at Amped: Get a feel for the collaborative atmosphere that defines the Saving Grace creative community.

A Note to Our Aspiring Contributors

To those who applied but weren’t selected for this specific cohort: keep writing. The T.L.T.Q. project is about longevity and resilience. Use this video as a guide, study the themes Alex discusses, and keep an eye on our News Section to see how our current graduates are putting these lessons into practice.

The scene is constantly growing, and there is always room for more authentic voices.
