Samh are a five piece wild psychedelic folklor band headed by singer-songwriter Sam Hodgson. The band formed in the summer of 2012 with the release of a four-track EP that was recorded in a greenhouse. In 2013, Samh released the 7 track EP Spin Us Still. From that EP, Samh became a five-piece band that is still together now, releasing music and performing across the UK.
Four of five of the band members are community musicians – dedicated to running workshops with disadvantaged communities, running small festivals, and gigs for the benefit of the local music scene in Huddersfield.
In 2019 they signed to Saving Grace, releasing their extremely well-received debut EP, glowinglow. In October 2021 Samh released their first full-length album on Saving Grace, Fat Of The Apple.
“Samh is a fabulous band. Absolutely brilliant, we like what they’re doing, love what they’re sending to us.”
Alan Raw (BBC Radio)
Samh has been steadily building up a cult-like following, receiving radio support from local stations, blogs and national outlets like BBC Leeds, BBC 6, BBC Introducing, Psychedelic Jukebox, Puls Radio (Germany), Radio X, and independent station support from as far afield as Japan. Notable performances include Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Bath Folk Festival, Long Division, and Tramlines.
Samh creates organic lyrics with trance-like repetitive rhythms and psychedelic overtones, music written in dreams, on top of mountains, and during out-of-body experiences. Their music feels like a lucid dream and at times a super ejector seat out the reality you think you know.
“I get so lost it will be only me that I can find.”
