Description

‘Step it Out Mary’ began as a children’s skipping song, maybe in the 1940s or earlier, in county Cork, Ireland. The game involved skippers lifting their left leg high on the final line, and if it touched the ground, they were out. A few years later Sean McCarthy wrote a tragic ballad to accompany the skipping chorus, and gave it to a friend, Danny Doyle, who released a recording of it in 1967. Aidan has known this song for many years and always dedicates it to his daughter Ilona, who begrudgingly danced beautifully to it for a number of years.
