Artist Interview: Lucas Assagba

When asked if she could collaborate with anyone in the world, she chose producer John Congleton; “I first heard of him through his work with Angel Olsen. Nine times out of ten, if I’m listening to an album I like, he had a hand in the production”

Lucas Assagba

Leeds-based Lucas Assagba is an alt-rock artist, currently making waves in the industry after a series of successful releases. Her artist name is inspired by Rachel Chinouriri’s use of her government name, stating that unconventional surnames aren’t spotlighted in the industry enough – this empowering choice is meaningful to a lot of musicians, and inspires more upcoming artists to be proud of their background too!

“I thought about using a million different stage names before I started making music. When I was 16, I asked Rachel Chinouriri why she didn’t use a pseudonym, and she said ‘Why wouldn’t I go by Rachel Chinouriri? It’s my name!’”

What’s Your Background In Music?

Pursuing music from the age of ten, Lucas hopped between instruments throughout high school until she found the guitar in 2021 – “I started producing and writing music when I was in college to pass the time, and now it’s all I ever think about”. It is a special feeling when an instrument chooses you, and how music can be a source of happiness and tranquility for those who love it!

What Is Your Biggest Achievement So Far?

Since supporting Jasmine.4.t at The Deaf Institute in May, Lucas has received support from Come Play With Me via their Next Up North programme: ‘the first artist development programme specifically supporting artists of marginalised genders and sexualities in the North of England’. Her recent release ‘Comet’ featured in Vevo’s Emerging Artist playlist, she has support from Youth Music and has also made an appearance in DIY Magazine.

Organisations such as Come Play With Me and Youth Music are two of the many tools available to upcoming artists, and are vital in building a solid platform for a blossoming career as an alt-rock icon.

Who Are Your Biggest Inspirations In Music?

Lucas’s upcoming EP ‘What more could I ask you to do?’ was inspired by the works of Lucy Dacus, Alvvays, Paramore and Indigo De Souza, an electric mixture of alt-pop, soft-rock and sad folk make a brilliant combination and I can’t wait to hear what magic she has created with these influences! In addition to this, Lucas mentions she is a huge Mitski fan.

“There’s a piece of her in everything I write.”

When asked if she could collaborate with anyone in the world, she chose producer John Congleton; “I first heard of him through his work with Angel Olsen. Nine times out of ten, if I’m listening to an album I like, he had a hand in the production”. Lucas also mentioned John’s wide range of genres and versatility is why she loves him so much, “I don’t like to stay in one place for too long, so to work with someone with as vast of a range as him would be a dream come true”.

Recommend Me An Album/Single/Soundtrack

Lucas recommends ‘Found You Again’ by fantasy of a broken heart and Jordana, this single has an upbeat minimalist-pop backing track with chilled and intimate vocals. Lucas has been a fan of FOABH for a while, and she even supported them when they performed in Leeds all the way from New York.

“Their album Feats Of Engineering is fantastic, but this single in particular is always in my head. This is some of the best pop songwriting and production I’ve heard in a long time.”

What’s Next?

Lucas’s latest single ‘Nosebleeds’ was released on the 28th August, tackling subjects such as post traumatic stress and the hard work that comes with healing yourself. This release is the second single to drop in anticipation for her next EP ‘What more could I ask you to do?’, and I can’t wait to hear what Lucas creates next!
