Artist Interview: Mason Whittle

Inspired largely by motown and northern soul, Mason names The Beatles and Ed Sheeran to be his biggest influences. Using the musical techniques from both eras, Mason blends the vintage sound of the 60’s with the classic 2010’s songwriter style and creates something brand new, and there’s something in it for everyone.

Mason Whittle

Singer/songwriter Mason Whittle makes rock/pop/folk music from his hometown in Huddersfield, incorporating influences from funk, soul and motown that he grew up hearing. Priding himself on his songwriting and fundraising superpowers, Mason connects with audiences through his love for music. In this interview, I chat with Mason about his background in music and exciting future endeavours!

What’s Your Background In Music?

“I’ve always loved music and the root of that comes from my parents, when I heard The Beatles I really fell in love with the sound. What was amazing was the realisation of just how much they changed their style in a short space of seven years.”

Fascinated by the versatile nature of The Beatles, Mason began his journey in music at nine years old when he learned the drums – soon after, he was gifted a guitar and hasn’t put it down since! Mason recalled listening to the likes of The Isley Brothers, Jimmy Ruffin, The Elgins and The Four Tops in the cellar of his previous family home, “that was a brilliant space where I heard all of my favourite music”. He also mentions to have gained a lot of his musical knowledge from his family members, which influences his style in a bespoke and one-of-a-kind way.

What Are Your Biggest Achievements So Far?

Mason has already collected a variety of notable achievements. In July 2024, he supported BRIT-Award winner Tom Walker in partnership with Kirklees Council and Sony Music, and that December he went on to raise over £2,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust and British Heart Foundation with his song “Christmas Time” – which reached No.3 on the iTunes singer/songwriter charts. This year, he co-wrote the main title song “Do You Hear The Lions Roar?” for the Amazon Prime film “The Hallowed Knight”. With this impressive portfolio of milestones, there’s no limit to what Mason could achieve next.

Who Are Your Biggest Inspirations In Music?

Inspired largely by motown and northern soul, Mason names The Beatles and Ed Sheeran to be his biggest influences. Using the musical techniques from both eras, Mason blends the vintage sound of the 60’s with the classic 2010’s songwriter style and creates something brand new, and there’s something in it for everyone.

When asked who he’s love to collaborate with one day, Mason said Ed Sheeran.

“I just think he is absolutely amazing, especially to be the only musician to play stadiums week to week entirely on his own, but to have written so many amazing songs for himself and others too.”
